And his discovery of the tomb of

Tutankhamun

The Carter Gallery depicts the journey of Howard Carter from his family background in Swaffham and other local villages to his discovery of the tomb of Tutankhamun.

In a replica of the first chamber of the tomb visitors can listen to Howard’s voice as he describes the discovery and can look through into an impression of that chamber where, using a candle, he saw for the first time the “wonderful things”.

A highlight is a collection of ancient Egyptian artefacts from around that dynasty and there are activities for children.
