Social
History

The Social History Room displays aspects of the town and its people over the years. The centrepiece of the steam engine reflects both the heavy engineering works that existed in the town during the 19th to 20th century but was the work of Harry Carter, a cousin of Howard.
Swaffham was known for its clockmakers and of the three clocks on show here there is one each from the 18th,19th and 20th centuries. The Plowright family also features with items from their agricultural engineering past and other displays echo various aspects of commercial and personal life in the town.
Prince Charlie’s cloak came to the museum through a long standing family connection to the town and the COVID quilt is an illuminating glimpse of stitched reality of a time which will long be remembered.
